GIMPS Wins EFF $100,000 Cooperative Computing Award!

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, http://www.eff.org/ , awarded GIMPS the $100,000 Cooperative Computing Award, http://www.eff.org/press/archives/2009/10/14-0 , for the August 23rd, 2008 discovery of the 45th known Mersenne prime, 243,112,609-1, a mammoth 12,978,189 digit number, http://prime.isthe.com/chongo/tech/math ... ime-c.html , found on a University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) computer in the GIMPS PrimeNet network, after GIMPS met every requirement, http://w2.eff.org/awards/coop-prime-rules.php , for the $100,000 award, http://www.eff.org/awards/coop.php , for discovery of the first 10 million digit prime number.

As promised, GIMPS will give $50,000 of the award to the UCLA Department of Mathematics, where Edson Smith was responsible for installing and maintaining the GIMPS software on their computers. Another $25,000 will be donated to a math-related charity selected by GIMPS founder George Woltman. The remaining $25,000 will be used to pay a GIMPS $3,000 (USD) Mersenne Prime Research Discovery Award, http://mersenne.org/legal/default.php#awards , each to Odd Magnar Strindmo and Hans-Michael Elvenich for their discoveries of the 46th and 47th known Mersenne primes (details below), as well as for funding other Mersenne prime discovery awards and other GIMPS expenses. Could YOU be the next person to discover a new Mersenne prime and win a cash research award, http://mersenne.org/legal/default.php#awards ?

Chris Caldwell maintains an excellent web site on prime numbers. See his page on Mersenne Primes and their history http://primes.utm.edu/mersenne/index.html . GIMPS has found 13 of the 47 Mersenne primes ever found during its 13 year history http://mersenne.org/various/history.php .
